Goa will soon host a one-of-a-kind T-20 tourney of its own.

One of the oldest and premier sports clubs in the state, the Panjim Gymkhana, has invited bids for prospective franchises to own five teams as part of the Panjim Gymkhana Members’ League (PGML).

The PGML, which is scheduled to kick-off in the second week of January 2022, will feature five teams who will battle for supremacy in the league, which will be played in a round robin format.

The registration of players for the League which is reserved exclusively for Panjim Gymkhana members has already started from November 1 and the big draw amongst the pre-League activities, the auctioning of players, will be held on 4 December. All the registered players will be segregated into various categories by the League’s governing body, the General Council, like marquee players, top order/middle order batsmen, pace/spin bowlers, wicketkeepers, etc.

“This is one of the first attempts to form a T-20 league exclusively for Panjim Gymkhana members. We are excited at the prospect of the Panjim Gymkhana introducing this innovative format and concept, which will help budding cricketers in Goa to flourish,” honorary secretary of the Panjim Gymkhana, Rajesh Khaunte said.

The bidding process began on November 1. The last day for submission of bids is November 15 while opening of bids and finalization of owners of the five teams will be carried out on November 17.

The PGML matches will be held largely over the weekends in Jan 2022.

According to the rules formulated for the tourney, a bowler shall be allowed to bowl a maximum of three overs in an innings and it is mandatory that a minimum of seven bowlers shall bowl in an innings. A batsman shall retire when his score is 35. Any runs in excess of 35 scored by a batsman before his score is 35 shall be allowed, according to the rules.

Located along the picturesque Mandovi River, the Panjim Gymkhana, established in 1963, has been recognized as one of the oldest and premier sports clubs and is considered as the nursery of cricket in Goa.

Interested parties can contact Panjim Gymkhana for details to own a team and members of Panjim Gymkhana interested to play are requested to register immediately.
