Chowgule College has announced one year certificate courses in broadcast journalism starting this academic year. Open to candidates interested in pursuing a career in the rapidly expanding field of media, the program will impart knowledge on skill sets required by the industry and deep insights into the field of broadcast journalism. The four courses are Television Reporting, News Anchoring, Videography and Video Editing.

The Broadcast Journalism program which will be conducted from the college’s state-of-the-art studio on campus has been designed along the lines of the best broadcast journalism programs in the country, under the guidance of senior industry and academic experts. Monika Kshatriya, a journalist with over 15 years of experience in broadcast journalism, having worked with leading networks in India including News X, IBN 7 and Aaj Tak has designed the curriculum and will mentor students through the program.

Said Monika Kshatriya, “The media courses train students on the various functions in news broadcasting. This is the first ever that a journalism course in India will allow students unlimited time in the media lab. The focus is on training students for immediate employability when they finish the course. The teaching methodology is unique and nurtures their creative narrative skills. ”

Well known TV journalists from India and UK will be part of the visiting faculty. Shivraj Parshad (formerly NDTV), Rukmini Sen (formerly Headlines Today), Ravider Bawa (formerly Aaj Tak), Rukmani Vishwanathan (formerly Times Now), Jonathan Flowers from Anglia TV and video editor with Nat Geo programs, senior journalist Nilu Damle, Amol Parchure (IBN  Lokmat), Sachin Parab (formerly Zee and Etv) and Krishnendu Bose award winning documentary film maker are some of the better known professionals who will share their experience and expertise with the students.

Added Dr. Nandkumar Sawant, Vice Principal, Chowgule College, “Chowgule College has always stressed on the importance of creating employable professionals and has taken steps to offer students an opportunity to take up various courses and programs according to their areas of interest. This course in broadcast journalism is another addition to the bouquet of courses being offered by the college”

Owing to the different structure of the course, students will spend more time practicing and presenting their work rather than on lectures. Their submissions are carefully analyzed and assessed each week by experienced faculty members. The methodology of teaching includes short lectures, demonstrations, screenings of documentaries and videos followed by practice. This is a crucial step where students explore the concept and identify what clicks or doesn’t for them.

Students are taught how to acquire information and package it for dissemination. They are encouraged to see the larger picture and place their story in its extended context. The course is flexible and promotes out-of-the box thinking. At every stage the faculty plays a supportive role in helping students understand the medium and finding more creative ways of expressing themselves.

Successful candidates will be suitable for employment across digital platforms. On completion of the course, students can be employable as reporters, videographers, producers, copy editors, assignment editors, video editors, documentary film makers and anchors/presenters. The college will ensure job interviews with national and local channels for students on completion of the program.

Intensive short term courses and workshops on grooming and make up, preparing for job interviews, creating video resume, basics of investigative journalism and other topics pertaining to the TV and print media will also be held through the year with qualified professionals.
